Wei Feng, Shan Tung, the 2nd LED City in China

More and more LED City concepts driven by commercial decision as part of the promotion on creating more revenues by means of Selling LEDs, LEDs application and production. Government Subsidies and regulation (e.g. EISA 2007, EU regulations, Title 24 in California will be important in market Development).
Whereas in China. We are aware of his superfast economy and industrial development, as in less than 10 years time, China will be the World No. 1 in electronics consumer market, Automobile consumer, Oil consumption… and probably the World Richest Country.


China is doing all kind of promotions in the energy saving awareness; we have to go Green in the electrical home appliance, Reduction of emission by banning the use of incandescent lamp.
In China we can see a lot of LEDs, practically 100% Traffic lamps are lit up by Solid State LED, whereas almost “Zero LED” in Hong Kong… what a shame to the Government of Hong Kong!

There is the first LED City Tianjin, and by time I went to Wei Feng where it is about 300 Km from Qingdao of Shan Tung Province,… A lot of LEDs, I think this is not officially announced as the 2nd LED City in China… To me , this is in fact a LED city.

This is some of my snap shots taken by the Nokia N97 mini cameras…I the past few days when I was there for meeting the prominent manufacturers for LED bonding equipment promotions.

OSTAR Compact LED

OSTAR Compact Surface mounting LED built with a light guide, a perfect solution as for Automobile DRL (Daylight Running Lamp).



Minimum power that is required for the LED for optimum Light output as for DRL application. The DRL was used to be on Hi End Model but now it is becoming common on Middle range car. Audi used to have a lot of Osram Dragon and would likely changing to OSTAR Compact soon.


OSTAR HeadLamp will be one of the major Head Lamp project in Osram on Automobile application. OSTAR Compact is a 5W power at 1.4A current, typical lighting output is 300lm under the 2 mm² Power Chip, The heat dissipation efficiency is 6K/W. Osram OSTAR will be the major Car lighting LED selection on most of the German cars soon.


German LED has a very good reliability as their R&D has been working intensively on pre-product evaluation, process Optimization, using the state of the Art LED bonding equipment supplying mostly by World No. 1 Semiconductor equipment supplier.

These are the ten Largest LED package houses, the largest is still Nichia, Osram, Cree, Samsung, LumiLEDs. (source LEDinside)
Note the aggressive growth of Samsung of 175% in 2009 versus 2008. This is the first time to have a Korean Company to be the top Five LED packages houese, overtaken LumiLEDs as number Four.

My Forecast of the Ranking for 2010 will be in the following orders
Nichia, Samsung, Osram, Cree, Seoul Semi, LumiLEDs, Everlight, Toyoda Kosei, Stanley and Liteon.

This show the Korean Power has been pushign hard to overtaking USA and go in par with Japan. Who knows one day Samsung will be the world Largest LED packaging house!?

Shuji Nakamura and the Revolution in Lighting Technology

I had such a great Happiness as someone hand carried this Book to me... with Shuji Nakamura signed on it!

You should know who this LED guru is, a young Electronics Engineer worked in Nichia as a Chemist and he invented the Blue LED chip! Later on he took a teaching seat in UC Santa Barbara. Now he is a founder of a new LED company in the US. This book was brought over to me by his young and smart Student researcher in UC.
This book tells you how the Tokushima young Engineer got a chnace to work in Nichia and developed his career in the Invention of Blue LED Chip... very interesting story about Shikoku, Nichia Chemical Company, Nakamura San and His Blue LED studies.
