Big Bucks for Bulb Replacement

Incandescent Light bulb, one of your house old Must-Have item for many years since this greatest invention was created 130 years ago by Thomas Edison.
However, this common article has something that would surprise you, When I was young my father told me not to take out the bulb hen it is glowing, was the filament is so fragile that could be broken mush easily when it is hot. Same thing applies to my beloved Telefunken ECC803 or Mullard 12AX7 Vacuum Tubes. They are made with heater with similar configuration as the Incandescent light bulbs.
Here are a few facts about the light bulb that has been lightening your house for many years.
1.) He is not the best to produce Lights
In fact as little as 1 watt out of every 50 that you put in contributes to actual light. The rest are lost to background heat. (A tungsten filament must be heated to between 3,000 and 5,000 degrees F to get it to glow).
2.)If we did away with them, they could power 2 cities the size of New York for free —By recent estimates, households and businesses in the United States lose about $18 billion every year to inefficiencies in lighting. In terms of power, that's enough to light up a city twice the size of New York for a whole year.
3.) Short life Span
Another thing that incandescent light bulbs are known for, besides the radiant heat, is their lifespan. Glowing for an average of about 1,000 hours before burning out. This short life span is also a built-in benefit for the light bulb companies. Bulbs that burn out once a year are replaced at a rate of 650 million per year in the U.S. alone. That's close to $2 billion in household spending directly attributed to incandescent inefficiency.
4.) Replacing the light bulb hasn't been easy. In reality, the incandescent light bulb has been on the way out for decades, but the transition hasn't been easy... Offices stopped using incandescent as their primary source of light back in the 1950s; today, the bulb's apparent replacement (the fluorescent tube) has emerged as a major culprit in the battle for the environment.
With mercury being a key ingredient in the millions of fluorescent tubes we use at work every day, disposal is turning into an industrial nightmare. A T5 CFL Cold Fluorescent Tube pollutions 10 tons of water in its life cycle. Today, the costs of cleanup — not to mention other shortcomings in the technology — have caused many businesses to start turning their backs on the once revered florescent.
Hope did not die with the fluorescent alternative...The Bright Idea did not die with the fluorescent alternative...
Because right now, there is an unprecedented push to make another light source the preferred commercial lighting solution of the 21st century. That is one of the top ten Inventions in 20th Century. It's so effective, in fact, that grocery stores are already using it in their refrigerated display cases because it produces very little background heat at all.
And it's so efficient that it needs just 18 watts of power to produce the same amount of light as a 100 watt Edison bulb.

2010 3D TV

The Avatar must be one of the best movie in the year not just of its imagination, story might not be so important but the creativity on the beautiful, colourful scene, background and the stereophonic sound and audio had made you part of the story itself; the 3D movie had been proven one of the reason of the success. Thanks to the Electronics Giant Samsung that created the market success of LED TV Q2 2009, That had already made the worlds’ Eyes Open to see the reality of the LED TV picture quality that goes with the finer resolution of the pixel of the LCD. In Last year, I still think that the 3D TV has yet come to town, After I bought a Blue ray player and insert the Disc Avatar into the tray to play, connected into my 4 years old Philips LCD HD TV., I could imagine that the Avatar must capture many people curiosity on why the Picture quality can be this GOOD!? And Yet my Philips is burning CCFL as backlight!

In the past FPD, FHD, LED and 120HZ, 200 Hz have all seen growth through marketing and sales strategy, 3D is now a few step ways from your door jumping into your living room.

This year, Korean Giant Samsung and other Global TV makers LG, Sony and Panasonic are expected to show their aggressiveness for Launch of 3D TV as a response to the applauding TV participants. Numerous 3D TV models with number more than 40 are being planned to launch in this year 2010.

Up to this moment, 3D TV is mainly applied in High-priced premium models utilizing LEDs and 240 Hz.

So what is your next home electronics Appliance purchase? I guess that should be a full LED backlit unit LED TV…it works perfectly with the Blue Rays… Even an analogue guy like I that usually goes late with these electronics toys. I had to say, that item might be a Must item in the list you purchase in the year.

Make a wise choice for the best you like in the market.

Some of the new LED lighiting installations in China

There are more and more interior decroations have been using LED as to replace the Incandescent lamp and CFLs as for LEDs' versitile programmable colour and intensity.
These are few examples...
All the sucessful installation acts as a promotion for these kinds of LED illumination itself as they are funny to watch, programmable colour to match the mood requirement...Longer life time and significant energy saving... Again, it is at least 10 year behind as for Hong Kong to compare with China. The Hong Kong Building designers, Architects, Lighting contractors, wake up and make up the City with More LEDs please. This City requires more vibrant and dynamic colours.

Home LED lighting will Come

The price of LED replacement Bulb is dropping more than I have expected.

This is a retail price reference as Hong Kong has a very responsive price reflection on the LEDs. With the rate of expansion in the LED production in China. The price would drop more than we expected of 10% to 20% per year.

Beginning of the year 2009, I bought a 3W K2 X3 LEDs replacement light bulb at HKD$196.00, after six months it was HKD$136.00. By end of the year 2009 it dropped to HKD100.00. Last week I went to buy one more again it was HKD88.00.

It is about 50% ASP drop a year, so by same time in 2011 it should be about HKD$30.00 a pieces, or USD$4.00. So I think that will be the time more people will be likely accept the price for LED replacement light bulb, and I think we will be able to have a lot of LED replacement in Supermarket, Electrical shop and everywhere… The price of $4.0 is 2 years earlier than I expected when I made the forecast beginning of 2009.

This will be a good news as we can see a huge demand of LED light bulb by 2011.

Let’s prepare to welcome the time of all LED SSL at home…in Hong Kong, so as the other large cities in the world.

LCD TV (LED) Back Lit unit design changes 2009-2012

Since Samsung had made a great success to create a hit in the new LCD TV using LED as the backlight in March 2009, the market accepted the Back light using LED for the LCD TV, by the LG had come up closely with similar design.
The very first LED TV used a lot of LEDs, there are three major type of Back light unit for LCD TV.Namely RGB direct LED back light, which has the best performance as it is true local dimming design, typical Hi end Product like Song , Samsung 9 series and Sharp.

The White LED direct back light, less colourful but true second order local dimming,
Samsung 8 series and LG top series TV are made with this design. Take for an Example LG top series LCD TV using up 24 pieces of 5252 LEDs in one section, they separate the whole 40” TV into 140 sections, so the Whole 40” TV has to be inserted with 3,360 Leeds (24x140). That will incur a very high cost in the Back Light modules.
The lower end model will use side lit unit,
Samsung, LG, Sony, Philips, JVC, Toshiba, Hisense, Haier…etc…
These use up 6 LED bars x 4 sides, they may use up 400 LEDs on LG LCD TV.

We know that the Chip supply is very tight since the Q4 of 2009, until Q1 2010, it seems do not improve much on the number of LEDs.. Gradually they reduce the LED bar to one on each side in 2010, and moreover they plan to further reduce to one bar on one side of the TV, thus to reduce the number of the LED in a TV.
This is an effective cost reduction programme, and at the same time reduces the pressure for the up stream food chain of LED supply.
Performance wise, as I always said that will be less as good as the older version.

This is the natural product phenomenon of any electronics Industry, the first generation is usually be topped up with the best technology and the best components, once the market is developed, the supplier would consider to cut dwon the material cost by using other technology or less component thus to drive down the cost . Thus the products will be more affordable and the market will be further expanded because of wider adoption rate.

Side Effect
May need higher intensity LED.

Heat management has to be improved as they are being squeezed into one LED bar on one side of the LCD TV.

The Cost down is significant LED BLU at $229 in 2009 will be lowered to $126 in 2010 43% cost down for 40” LCD TV’ according to Display Bank studies.

The continuous market for LCD TV s not just LED BLU, but with 3D as the new sales gadget. Recently, LG has launched the largest 3D TV 62” with full LED blu. Market size of LED LCD TV in 2010 to be 32M units that grow 9 times Y/Y and this correspond to 19% of the total LCD TV market size.
