Only 3 out of 21 Buildings are using LED Decorative Lightings in this Christmas 2010

There are 21 buildings are beautified with fascinative Lighting for welcoming this Christmas.
Only three buildings are using the Energy Friendly LED as the light source, The rest 18 buildings use up 94,000 incandescent light bulbs. From our estimation during this Christmas holiday those decorative light will consume 1,500.000 KW of power that is approximately the total electricity consumption for 338 families of 4 members each. The CO2 emission will be 1,000 tons.

Worth our appreciation are those three ECO buildings: Regal Kowloon Hotel, Tsim Sha Tsui Centre and Empire Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Solid State LED lighting can be reused for many years, where incandescent light bulbs will be degraded and or spoiled after the rains, many of them can only be used once!

Light Idea

This is a simply, smart, eco, light idea using LED, just one of many I have seen at Tsuen Wan City Hall today.  They used a series of Vertical LED chain to light up the Paper folding decorative lighting hood.
Bright, Light, Low cost, ECO and most of all, looks attractive to me that I could not stop taking out my Hand set to make a picture of it.

Sylvania Ultra A-Libe 12-Watts LED Bulb

When the compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) became popular 15 years ago, it was a welcome alternative to the toxic, energy-sucking incandescent bulb used around the world.

The light emitting diode (LED) bulbs were fast on the CFL's heels, and even though they're more durable and efficient, many people have avoided upgrading to LEDs because of the high price.

In late November, Lowes and Osram Sylvania announced plans to introduce what they say is the brightest LED replacement for America's most popular light bulb, the 60-watt incandescent (Intelligent Energy Portal).

The SYLVANIA Ultra A-Line 12-watt LED bulb provides 810 lumens of light while using only 20 percent of the energy required by its predecessor and lasts 25 times as long as a conventional bulb.

Best of all, the current price of the A-Line LED is around $20 - a small price to pay for a light bulb that will probably burn for 20 years without having to be replaced.
The new SLYVANIA bulb is already available on Lowes.com and will be available in all Lowe's stores by mid-2011.

According to Buildaroo.com, "Phillips is now selling a similar LED bulb for one penny less than Sylvania's bulb. Philips' bulb, called the Ambient LED, also uses 12 watts but gives off slightly less light than Sylvania's."

Philips LED Lighting

I had just bought Philips LED lighting lamp for replacing my last CFL on one side of living room.
It consists of three sets of LED modules, each LED modules should have three LEDs, looks like to be Luxeon Rebels. The power supply is mounted in the centre portion of the lighting fixture. That can effectively isolate from the heat energy of the LED. Thus to prolong the life time of the LED.
It is warm white and Bright enough for the room.
Price wise is about 6 times more expensive that the similar deign made of CLF. It was HKD$3,500.00 including installation. Well, It can reduce 360Kgs Co2 in 20 years of Operation.

Let me see how long this LED lamp can last, I am feeling alright as it save power evey time it is on.

Philips LED light bulbs Sales in Hong Kong

Philips masterLED has been in Market for year, juts until now, we can see they are on sales in Hong Kong. As I have been asking, only with limited stick for sales.

This is a good sign as we can see more and more people is eager to spend more for high quality LED lighting product.  Price is still high as compared with CFL. Most of the people knows what CFL is and I have observed that not too many people is aksing for LED Lighting fixture, as they are generally 5 times more expensive. This is the Display Philips LED lighting bulbs on sales in a Lighting Shop in Tsuen Wan.
All are made with Rebel LED,  manufactured with Highest Quality attention in Penang Malaysia.
I believe that production of Rebel will be expanded 1.5X in 2011 to meet the market demand.

OptoGan Opened a New LED production line in Saint Petersburrg, CIS

This is the latest and largest example of investment and state support for the LED market in Russia. A Russia-based LED manufacturer, the Optogan has opened a new manufacturing plant in St. Petersburg, which has benefited from an overall investment of EUR 80 million ( 3.35 billion rubles).

The facility, which is the largest LED component and module factory in the Eastern Europe and CIS region, was opened by Sergey Ivanov, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation.

The factory will employ up to 800 people and covers 15,000 sq.m of floor space, including 5000 sq.m under a clean-room environment. The first production line has an annual production capacity of 360 million LEDs.

Optogan says that the opening of this new high-tech factory in Russia marks another step forward in the modernization and globalization of the Russian economy.

Optogan was founded in 2004 by three Russian scientists in Helsinki, Finland. Since 2005 Optogan GmbH has been developing chip technologies in Dortmund, Germany and chip production in Landshut, Germany. In late 2008, Optogan was acquired by Onexim Group, a private investment fund which is Optogan’s major shareholder. Other shareholders are Rusnano, a state investment fund, and the regional Republican Investment Company (RIC). The Optogan Group manufactures LED chips, packaged emitters, and LED lamps and luminaires.

Opening ceremony

As well as Deputy Prime Minister Ivanov, the ceremony was attended by Valentina Matvienko, Governor of St. Petersburg; Yegor Borisov, President of Russia’s Sakha Republic (Yakutiya); Anatoliy Chubais, General Director of Rusnanotech; Mikhail Prokhorov, President, Onexim Group and a large audience of well-known representatives from the world of politics, research and industry.

The three founders of Optogan – Maxim Odnoblyudov, Vladislav Bougrov and Alexey Kovsh – introduced the production facilities and demonstrated Optogan’s highly-efficient LED lamps and explained about energy savings and the avoidance of hazardous substances.

Maxim Odnoblyudov, President of Optogan Group, noted that the launch of the factory is a major step in the company’s development. Vladislav Bougrov, General Director of the newly opened factory, said that only the first production line had actually been opened with a production volume of 30 million LEDs a month.
LED assembly lines.

“LEDs produced in St. Petersburg will be sold in Russia and abroad to produce luminaries.”

Against the trend to establish new LED production facilities solely in the Far East like China, Optogan has found a suitable legislative and infrastructural environment to establish high-tech manufacturing in Russia to enabling high-volume LED output at competitive costs.

Rusnano, the state fund providing investment for technology projects in the Russian Federation, has provided support for the company and is one of the major shareholders. “The key goal of Rusnano is to develop modern production facilities based on leading international scientific knowledge, ensuring they can compete globally,” said General Director of Rusnano, Anatoly Chubais.

“The opening of Optogan’s factory is one of the major synergies of science and business," continued Chubais. "Technology based on the work of Nobel prize winner Zhores Alferov has been transformed into mass production, making this a first step in the development of a new energy efficient economy and development of the lighting industry in Russia.”
Mikhail Prokorov, President of the main shareholder Onexim Group, said: “Onexim's strategy is to invest in these types of innovative companies, which can produce quality products and win a major market share in Russia, as well as [having] the potential to grow globally. We are sure that, thanks to this type of production, our country has all the opportunities to develop on the global markets.”

I think Optogan will take a 5 years to ramp and to meet the huge internal consumpion before they can export their product. As 35 Million units a month is consider "Dwarf" as compared with any of mid size LED company in China.

LED Light up Umbrella and Cooling Fan Umbrella

This Day Shade Night Light serves as a regular patio umbrella during the day, but during that time it also absorbs the sun's rays via some flexible solar panels. A series of flexible light emitting diodes provides light so that you can still hang around on the patio in the dark. The lights are controlled with a switch and the intensity of light can be adjusted depending on your preference.

There is another Umbrella tht has an electric cooling fan top of of it. This would provide a comfortable draft of cold air from top when you walk on the Golf court and or conjested street in Summer!

The Most Powerful Die Bonder for High Power LED Manufacturing

From the Courtesy of ASM Pacifc Technolgy Ltd Web Site.

From Courtesy of VisEra Web Site

As what I had previous mentioned, after almost a year, we can visualize that the HB LED has more or less established an industrial standard for a package size of approximately in the range of 3mmx 3mm to 3.45 mm X 3.45mm with height 2mm to 2.6mm By the major players Cree, Osram, Seoul Semi, Nichia, Edison, VisEra…
These will be one of main stream of the HBLED in the coming 5 years at least as these would have certain advantages such as high volume manufacturability, small foot print, high lumen output, Good thermal performance, SMD compatible, high reliable, reasonable good cost structure.
 The Market Demand

In order to put a high power LED chip onto ceramic substrates, we need to ensure that there is no void under the die attaches media such as High silver content epoxy. The epoxy coverage has to be even, and the process control of the dispensing, stamping method has to ensure that the total void should be less than 10% and single void should not be larger than 5%. Thus to avoid “Hot Spot” of the LED during light up operation.

High Density Manufacturing

If we have formed a standard size of say 3mmx3mm footprint, we have to determine the suitable panel size for the ceramic substrate.. Base on today technology, the panel size has to be large enough as the larger the ceramic panel the lower the cost of it as due to reasons of the tooling availability, the efficiency. Now the optimized size such as panel of size 100mmx100mm. That would be a challenge not to create too much warppage, the best industrial product can achieve warp page less than 0.3% of the width of the panel. That is approximately 12 mil of a 4 inch panel. With a 4 x4 inch panel, typically we can obtain about 1,000 HBLEDs. Some smaller Chip Scale LED can even come up with almost 2,000 LED on one Panel.

Liquid Silicone Molding for the Dome lens

It will be the main stream for LED lens using Silicone molding method for certain advantage of Consistency in lighting after years, Silicone material is stable and will not change colour. The Lighting resistance is low. One mould shot can build all the lens on each of the every LED on the ceramic substrates. There is a way to ensure that the Optical centre is aligned with the LED die centre, where by there is a demand to have the Die bonder to have certain alignment method to be same as the down stream molding process. The Die bonder has to perform Ceramic Panel Global alignment on two edges on for 3 or 4 alignment points before the commence of the die bonding.

Challenge on the Die Bonder Accuracy
There is a need to have diode, TSV, or EDS die to be built onto the tiny space of the 3mm x3 mm ceramic substrate there is tough challenge on he epoxy dispensing. As well the 1mmx 1mm HB LED chip has to be living in the tiny House of the cavity with the Diode. The die placement and die rotation has to be better the+/- 38 microns +/-1 degree, under a process capability CpK>1.67! The basic die bonder should have a capability to achieve a die placement of +/- 15 microns. At three sigma for certain Applications.
Challenge on the Ceramic Panel Handling

Since the panel is thin as 0.3mm under a perimeter of 100mm x100mm, that is fragile and easy to be damaged if the Die bonder design is not able to provide a Smooth transportation on X and Y and Z axes. Well there are ways to do that, either using old fashioned way of belt transportation to transfer the panel from the input magazine into the dispensing stage and then Bonding stage for bonding before passing thought to the output stage. There is way to apply vacuum or mechanical clamping to hold the thin panel, but that should be having soft touch and jam detection or there will be disasters. Imagine that the whole panel is bonded with 1,000 LEDs and during the transportation at output side, there is a mis-placed magazine that would crack the whole panel! The LEDs, Epoxy, ceramic panel will cost over a few hundred Dollars!
New Generation Die Bonder for LED

In The Market, there is a new Die bonder, that has all the above challenged being tackled, plus

Patent pending Work Holder that would have a smooth Transportation of the ceramic panel with theoretical 0.1 mm Thickness without any Damages. Carrier Free operation, another twenty features such as Magazine Tilt detection, Magazine Orientation detection, Panel Position Detection, Ceramic height profile detection for Epoxy and bond stage. With Full Post Epoxy and Post bond inspection system. Least but not last Die Placement and Rotation process detection.
With an UPH of more than 8,000 with most the above feature being switched on…

This is ASM AD838L new generation Die Bonder for HB LED application.

2011 LED Market Forecast for China, Europe and Russia

Since the Samsung launched the LED TV there was approximate 2.9% penetration rate in 2009 and rough 30% in 2010, it was happened mostly in Q1 Q2 of 2010. And down the road, we were expecting that the LED TV would continue to have a record high sales in September, but to our Astonishment, that the maker becoming slow down in End August.

Partly de to the stock level of CCFL Back light was still high, partly CCFL supplier offers lot price attraction for us. We estimate that it will be consuming all stock of CFL by End Dec, in Q1 2011, we believe that the back light LED marker will start to run the LED production in much larger scale. Since the number of LED on each of the LED TV is about 200 for 42” TV. There is a keen reduction (100%) in the number of LED in each of the LED TV especially the Samsung, LGI, etc. The overall market for 2010 on LED is sill strong, not as the major analysis expects 50%, probably around 30%.

Though we know that someone forecasts 2011 would be as high as 50%. That would be a lot still, but do not forget that the figure will be affect by the economy of the area, and the equipment purchase would likely be happened if they have used up all their capacity.

CCFL flight back
With the CCFL flight back with an attractive price as leverage, original LED TV penetration expectation was 30% for 2010. According to Unity Opto ‘s forecast the new penetration rate is 15%-20% for 2010.
Whereas Epistar forecast will be to 20% to 25%. However Epistar would be optimistic for 2011 as Korean would be trigger launch of new model with more attractive features, and at Same Time China will be a big marker demand for LED TV. He is very optimistic to see that all year penetration rate will be touching 40% in 2011.

LED TV Market 2011
The European market would be having another 6% growth for 2011 as comparing with that of 2010. Whereas US may have a light growth of 1-2% only as they have been Saturated with the LED TV shipment typical supplied by Vizio and Samsung. China would the market supporter for LED TV as partly due to the special incentive scheme for TV in rural side, and partly China as to support the consumer electronics segment partly to support the GDP index growth, and partly to maintain the employment of a large work force.

7th Sept, Mr. Zhang Xue Bin, Executive Chairman and CEO of Skyworth, China’s 4th Largest LCD TV makers told to the Hong Kong media and investors that during the April-May LCD TV old stock purging action by selling at a low price. After World Club came to an end we had slash of the TV sales unless there is new stimulus campaign. Skyworth’s CFO said that In China, there are approximately 600M sets of LCD TV what had been servicing for 5-6 years. There is a necessity and need for replacement with by new LCD TVs, amongst these 600 Millions sets, there is at least 48 Millions to 72M sets of them would go for LED Backlight units. These actions of new TV purchase will not stop for next 12 months!

I believe that the Big Players like Samsung, LGE, Sony, Toshiba and Chinese band like Hisense, TCL, Konka and Skyworth, Changhong will carry on shipping out more cost effective LCD TV or a low-Cost-Version TV Before Chinese New year 2011.

TV Sales Gadget
The problem lies in the consumption of the CCFL BLU TV first, it would still have to take 8-10 weeks to absorb this inventory, so there is also a possible trick of selling CCFL BLU with mixed of LED BLU… to tell the consumer, THIS IS LED TV.. Selling at a higher price..nother way to push for more sales revenus is to put LED in one bar or fore concern of the screen, this would be workable for small screen size TVC such as 27” to 37” TV Set.

The purpose is to enlarge the coverage of the LED TV portfolio. Next year, I think the sales if the LED TV would move up to another heights of record as more 3D featured TV and Smart TV will be available, Smart TV to be the home entertainment centre for some of the technology lovers. LED TV cost will be lowered by another 25%-30% as we can buy now. Brighter with lesser LED be more effective light transmission would be the main stream, that will be the evergreen product as a result of the latest LED technology with least power consumption, mercury free and reasonable beautiful picture quality.
An era for LED truly penetration of 40% could be found across all sized… with 32”-40” will be the most popular size as an average.
Base on the market survey we had, there will be more or less an additional 30% as of this years demand on LED for BLU.

Hong Kong LED Light Bulb
We have been using LED light bulb at home for the sake of social conscience and caring of the environment, and as a way to perform the energy harvest. In the two years, the retail selling price is kept on dropping at rate of less 30% a year. A 3W K2 x3 type LED was HKD$330 three years ago, and Now we can get it at about HKD$80.00.
That was the similar as what we could se in HK in the past two years Today I saw the place where I am living are changing all the CFL light bulbs in to the 7W LED at the garden walking path form MTR to each of the buildings. This is a first time happened to see LED being immigrated into one of the largest residential estates.

Japan SSL Market
This is the fastest blooming market for LED replacement light bulb business, reason is mainly due to geographic and historical reason, Japan is intricately lack of any energy resources, they have to struggle for energy harvest. Under such a high living standard county the price of CLF is not low at all, Why not switch to LED! In Akihabara beginning of the year able to see various supply of LED replacement Light bulb in the market, Panasonic, Toshiba Litetech, Sharp and Citizen made LED, light bulb, the price was 4,000 Yen Jan 2010, but now It is just about 2,500 Yen for the same type same model.. That is a significant price drop about 37% in a year!

Japan LED bulb design
Form what we know from the three major supplier for LED bulbs, there is common packaging method by employing a lot of LED 20-168 LEDs in a light bulb. Most f them a low power LED.
Reason is three folds:
1. They would like to go for better heat distribution as the area of contact is much bigger.
2. The smaller the chip size the higher the LED emission efficacy. A small chip of 16x18 mil 0.3W led can have an efficacy of 36%. Where is a 100mil x 100mil Power chip does have 26% only.
3. And there is input that Nichia bought a lot of MOCOV for 3 inch diameter afer. so they have no way but go for smaller chip size.

US and EU LED Package design
Cree, Lumileds, Osram are going for Bigger chip approach. Thus is their strength ad they can have a better chip design, one chip says it all. No matter Ostar, Oslon, Rebel square, XP, Multichip approaches.

The Big Five Movement on Lighting
Nichia is still using their approach of Multi chip format.
Cree is doing more on Lighting, after MacDonal, Star Buck, Burger King, Wart mart and Costco. Cree is working on project with bigger shopping malls, fast food chains in USA for their Lighting LEDs. They have the chip level phosphor application.
Osram is traditional Automobile business model. It is wise to diversify their LED segmentation for more BLU and General Lighting.

Lumileds Rebel it self is a versatile product, no matter BLU, Lighting, general lighting are using the similar package. Their LED is moving into a binning free process, meaning that they will have a better process control on their characteristic on their Lumiramic process such that the binning is minimized down the road.

General Illumination LED for Tunnel
Xi’an Liming, which is one of China’s largest suppliers of outdoor LED lighting as well as manufacturing LED tunnel lighting, worked with the engineering team at Future Lighting Solutions to ensure that the fixtures would meet national tunnel lighting standards as well as have a sustainable LED supply.

The fixtures are providing illumination for the Xinkailing and Wang Zhu Yuan No. 2 tunnels of the Liu’an-to-Wuhan highway, a north-south extension of the Shanghai-to-Wu Wei main line ( one of the country’s key east-west arteries). Running the entire 4.7km (2.9 mile) combined length of the two tunnels, the lighting was a joint project of Xi’an Liming and the Anhui Province Huan Yu Highway Construction Development Co Ltd.

Each 50W and 100W tunnel lamp contains 42 and 72 LUXEON Rebel LEDs, respectively. Each Tunnel of 1Km will use up approximately 1,000 Lamp and each will have 72 Rebel, a tunnel of 5KM will have 360,000 LED…Do not forget There are thousands tunnels in China. So this will be another big portion for their product revenue growth. Similarity, Osram Opto Semiconductors’ Golden Dragon Oval Plus LEDs are being utilized to illuminate the Shanghai Ren Min Road Tunnel and Guangzhou Zhu Jiang New City. Each of the installations used around 30,000 Golden Dragon Oval Plus LEDs from Osram Opto Semiconductors. A Tunnel will contribute approx. half RMB millions of LEDs and another half million for associated electronics.

Note that so far, Only High quality LED such as Osram Gold Dragon Oval and Rebel can be used for Tunnel as we can not allow fany failure of the LED. It is hard to replace the LED light bulb in case of Failure…

LED market in Russia Expansion
Although in recent years the Russian LED market has been characterized by a lack of standardization, a lack of a transparent pricing policy, and low product quality, this situation is changing rapidly. State funding and investment from private companies is helping to build a domestic LED infrastructure and, all over Russia, companies dedicated to LED lighting technologies are emerging.
The Russian state is playing a major role in the development of the domestic Russian LED market. In March 2010 the Presidential Commission for Modernization announced that the transition from incandescent bulbs to energy-efficient lighting devices will not take place by implementing energy-efficient saving lamps (CFLs), but by converting to LEDs directly. The State has also decided to introduce, at short notice, new standards for LED lighting technologies.

There is a strong political willingness to establish LED lighting technologies within the Russian market, and capital investors including private bank and government investor are helping to establish a domestic Russian LED production capability. Currently, Russia imports 98 % of its LED lighting, but this situation will change as domestic suppliers become better established. Meanwhile, Russia’s biggest companies, such as Russian Railways Corporation and Gazprom, are among the largest consumers of LED technology.

Further, the newly-founded Non-Profit Association of Russian LED Manufacturers, which has been established by competitive suppliers Optogan and Svetlana Optoelectronics, is likely to play an important role in the consolidation of the Russian LED lighting market;
Characteristic of Russian LED factories in previous the state owned factory has been manufacturing LED about 20 years ago, surprising to see that their facilities are still more or less the same as 20 years ago. Looking at another angle, Former USSR had an advanced technology on LED and Microelectronics. All they need are certain standardization on equipment and process.

Optogan expands production
As evidence of the growing LED infrastructure in Russia, the St. Petersburg-based company CJSC Optogan recently placed an order with Aixtron for two MOCVD systems for GaN-based LED growth. The St. Petersburg facility was acquired by Optogan from Elcoteq, a global electronics manufacturing services (EMS) company, in May 2010.
Also, Optogan recently appointed Markus Zeiler, a former Osram employee, to oversee the expansion of Optogan on a global scale. Optogan is a manufacturer of LED components, LED lamps and LED luminaires. The company was established in Finland in 2004, and was acquired in 2008 by Onexim, a Russian financial group.

Monocrystal decides against IPO
Russia also has a leading supplier of sapphire crystals in Stavropol-based Monocrystal, Inc. The company, a subsidiary of Energomera, appointed Oleg Kachalov as its new CEO in June this year. The company recently postponed its planned IPO, citing volatility in global equity markets and other factors. "We remain very confident in the strength of our business," said Kachalov. "We are able to finance our 2010-2011 business growth plans from internal source, however, we may consider returning to the equity market at a future date when conditions become more favorable."

Summary
The LED lighting industry in Russia is becoming more mature as the country seeks to develop a vertically-integrated manufacturing infrastructure. There would be enormous opportunity for investor for LED.
China has a Lowest CDI of 4.6% amongst these BRiC Countries: Brazil 4.7%, Russian 7%, India 9.9%.
China Q3 GDP increasing by 10.6% as compared with the same Quarter 09, a healthy Growth.
China National Energy Policy has not been changed so far, quite different as cooling action on the overheated real estate economy. The LED Energy Derivatives are still of the major energy strategic plan for China at least next 4-7 years.
LED TV BLU has been slowing down for a couple of months and will be recovering gradually, even the worse case scenario is BLU business goes down due to minimizing the number of LED per TV set, and tricky low end LED TV maker to use a few LED unit on TV as sales gadget rather than to use it for Picture quality. These LED packagers will do their best to convert the Bonder for General Light Business if their price is not competitive enough.

General Lighting market
From the analyses in the General Lighting market we can see that the growth is high, starting for less than 0.1% of the LED for General Market in 2009, this interprets that it is a huge market potential for coming future. See most of the Customers in Russia Northern China, they are having more than 80% going for General Lighting products. Though there is a lot of Propagation Attack on the failure of the Solid State LED street lamps, the adoption rate is low and the price of LED lighting fixture is still expensive… These are the prime market drivers for us to work on.

Overall opinion, the LED market will continue to be hot as 2010 in 2011.

Russia LED Business 2010-2020

In 2010, when many patents in the LED industry would expire. Chinese companies are expected to break through the shackles of the intellectual property rights from American, European, and Japanese giants. With the China Local government subsidize at least 50% of the cost, or US$1.5 million on average for each purchase of a MOCVD. And numerous Land space and electricity incentive support to the major LED makers. That will be a spring board for providing extra vibrant for China LED manufacturers to pursue it to be the World No. 1 LED manufacturing Centre in the coming three years.

Russia, on the other hand is not new for LED, they have been involving the LED research and development in the 60s, and they had an early successful light up of a Blue LED chip 10 years before Shuji Nakamura did it in 1993... Of course the life span and the light intensity is not able to comparing Shuji’s LED!! The Country is rich resources with oil and gas and in fact they electricity is not as expensive as Germany USA or Japan. Currently 1000KV/Hr of Electricity is rated for 3.5 Robles. (USD$0.166). However they have concern for the environment as they know that the mercury is coming with CFLs. The Russian Ministry of Economy Development has recently announced that starting from 2011 they would start to ban the sales for Incandescent light bulb, and to prohibit the sales of 75W or more incandescent light bulbs in 2011. Till 2014, no one can be allowed to sell Incandescent light bulb anymore.

The CFL production capacity is inadequate and price is high, Russia is now trying to build CFL factories with minimum annual shipment of 200M pieces. The sales of CFL is about 50M pieces almost relying on import. That the price is approx 140-300 Robles (USD$4.60 to USD$10.00) which is almost 2 to 5 times more expensive than those we can get in USA. On the other hand, we can see that there are thousands of building was over 100 years old in Moscow, the ceiling is high and that is expensive to change the light bulb when the fails. LED is the suggestion for replacing the Incandescent lamp.

Local Cities are moving forward progressively, Moscow, being a model itself to push forward for going for green product, starting 1st of Oct 2010, Moscow will not purchase incandescent light bulbs nor any other uncompromising illumination device meeting their energy saving requirement.

Starting 2007 June Moscow government advised to go for green programme to the enterprises, offering a generous 50% incentive support to that enterprise that can reduce emission. Up to now, there are many companies who has granted with the subsidizing programme. Now a lot of LED companies is being supported by Russian Government for LED manufacturing. And the trend for Russia is to Move from Incandescent directly into LED, skipping the CFL…

The LED would be a big energy saving programme in both China and Russia in the coming 10 years. Partly as they are being driven for adoption and being supported by the government.
Again, Russia and China, as the Supper Power will demonstrate that they have the capability to manufacture Super Bright LEDs to supply for their need and the export to other countries. Let's watch out!

Osram Zelion LED for Airfield Illuminations

Osram adds to its product portfolio of LED solutions for the airfield market on 21 Oct 2010.  OSRAM is the first brand manufacturer to offer a robust and flexibly deployable solution for long-lasting and resource-saving airfield lighting of the next generations.
Ever increasing volumes in passengers and freight in global air traffic also raises safety requirements. Efficient and durable LED modules such as Zelion H increasingly gain acceptance in these areas as sustainable and future-proof lighting solutions.

OSRAM called on its years of experience in the field of airport lighting for the evaluation assessments during the development of Zelion H: the standard test programme included operation life tests at maximum temperatures, and ultra low temperature and Humid environment as well as power-temperature cycle tests. In addition to these tests, the Zelion LED modules were also able to prove in the FAA Sinus Test (AC 150/5345-46C) their ability to withstand the severe shocks and vibrations of everyday airport use.

Many applications with just one module, Zelion H covers a wide range of different airfield applications with a single flexibly deployable four LED modules. The availability of two reflector models (6° and 10°) expands the suitability of these LED modules to almost all kinds of airfield lighting. They can be integrated into existing lighting systems by all reputable OEMs and are available in white, red, blue and green light colours.

With a light intensity of 2000cd per Watt, which equals a 75 per cent energy reduction in comparison to a halogen solution (500 cd/W).

Additionally one 48W halogen lamp (24 kcd) can be replaced by only four LEDs with a total of 19W (38 kcd) which results in further saving potentials. Beside energy Harvest, but also has a significant contribution on the airport’s CO2. These systems make another contribution toward lower operating costs: Zelion H modules can be used continuously for up to three years. In terms of durability, this makes them far superior to other lamps, too, because the average service life of a halogen lamp runs to approx. 3000 hours, that of an LED solution to at least 25,000 hours. Imagine the busy airport does not allow the replacement of Failed halogen lamps, under an international airport runway, there might have thousands of such installation, that means that they will have to replace halogen lamp every week one of two!

ABOUT OSRAM

OSRAM (Munich, Germany) is part of the Industry Sector of Siemens and one of the five leading lighting manufacturers in the world. Largest in Europe. World Ranking in terms or Revenue is 2nd in 2009 and 2010. They have manufacturing Plants in Penang.

Epistar's recent deveopment on LED for general lighting

Epistar's speculation that current LED 40W bulbs is USD$15, by time 2011 60W LED bulb will be USD$9.90. and will drop to USD$7.50, that would be about 5 times of the incandescent bulb with a penetration rate of 10%. The World’s LED penetration increases 1-2% that will be approximately USD$40B business.
It is the time for LED lighting, the largest market is the interior lighting, The RED LED efficacy is 168lm/W at laboratory, and We estimate that we would achieve the warm white efficacy of 130-150 lm/W in beginning of 2011. That would surpass the efficacy of cold white; their price can be almost the same.
Current situation is that the current cost of warm white LED is higher than cold white, whereas warm white is 30% less bright as cold white. Therefore, the efficacy and cost of warm white over cold white is the key factor for a higher penetration of general light application.

According to DOE’s estimation, the cold whet LED target efficacy is 113 lm.W in 2009.
The OEM cost is USD$25 for 1,000 Lumen, Warm white LED target efficacy is 70 lumens, OEM cost if USD$36 for 1000 lumens. They speculate that by 2012, Cold white efficacby is 170 lm/W OEM Cost of USD$6.00 for 1,000 Lumens. Cold White LED efficacy is 128 lm/W, OEM cost is $11.00 for 1,000 Lumens.

Recent finding on Epistar’s LED development is moving farther than what DOE can expect. The HV LED has shortened the technology gap between cold white and warm white LEDs. Their warm white LED was able to attain 110 lm/w in 2009, much higher than the other major players of 80 lm/W level. They expect that they will achieve 130 lm/W soon in 2012.

Compare with a 60W incandescent bulb that deliver 800 Lumen. The fact is when LED Efficacy is 100 lm/w, a 12.5W LED may have 50% electrical energy would be dissipated in form of thermal energy. Once if we can improve the efficacy to 150 lm/W, we need only 6.6W LED bulb, we just have 6.6W LED heat energy for the light bulb to deliver. In this LED, the power dissipation is 14.W. Only under this development. LED can be used extensively for replacement of the incandescent Light bulbs.

Epistar said that when the LED replacement bulb is just two times the price of incandescent, that the market to accept LED will be going up to 25% of adoption rate.
