Road Map for Commercial TV 2009-2013

The TV has been launched by Samsung for its edge lit back light technology in end 2008, They are enjoying great market acceptance and success, as they could sell 500,000 sets in less than three months.

LG is the next flowerer that is using different technology, the direct back lit has a theory that it can have 2D local dimming and should have a better dynamic contrast, but the draw back is higher cost as A 55” TV is using typical 3,360 LED in 240 segments each with 14 LEDs.

Sharp is the No. 1 largest production of LCD TV in Japan and Sharp would make a larger promotion in the overseas market for their RGB Direct back light unit LCD TV, I am sure that they will start the mass production on LED with larger volume by end of the year, we ill see more Aquos LCD TV with RBG lack light unit in 2010 Q1. However rte manufacturing cost of Sharp TV in Japan is high. They might have to open other Asian factories for the assembly of TV in order that they stay competitive with the Korean Giants.
More players are coming soon as Philips will launch 40, 46 and 52” LED TV.
JVC Will launch 32” LED TV weight just 5 kgf, after Sharp has Launched RGB Direct BL TV for Hi End Model, they will implement on more lower end Aquos Model. Sharp should Increase LED production or OEM their LED for BLU by Nov. 2009.
Sony will move on with full spectrum supply of back lit variety such as CCFL, HCFL, edge lit LCD TV and RGB back lit unit LCD TV with his LED suppier from Japan and Osram.

China Hisense has produced LED back light TV for Russian market and this may be the next low cost phase of Mass production of LCD TV in the price range of $1,000-1,200 for size of 42” in 2010.

Vizio will launch their 55” TV in September 2009 for North American market, surprisingly that they can sell at a price of $2,000.. That should be LED edge lit back lit TV manufacturing in China.

By Q3 2010, we ca see that these Three countries Korea, Japan and China will be launching their LCD TV with tough price competition and each of them are doing their best in emulation of the others. Korea Samsung has been unloading some of their production to their subcon, LG has announced selected Flextronics for manufacturing their 19, 22, 26, 32 and 37” TV , not sure if this world 2nd largest EMS can be offer for more larger size TV then in their Mexico factory.

On the other hand, not sure if Panasonic would till produce their Plasma TV panel, as from the basic physics, a plasma TV is actually perform better than LCD in terms of colour natural reproduction and faster flash rate. However, better performance may no be the only supporting reason for a product to be survive in the commercial market, Like Sony Betamax is much better in performance and JVC VHS, however that Sony has to admit that the publicity is going for VHS, they have to close their production in 1988.

So I guess that Panasonic will increase their LCD TV volume and at same time further reduce the Plasma TV number by end 2010.

On the other Hand, OLED TV will not be popular until 2015 as they ahve to solve the low production yield and short life time issues, especially for larger panel size.

As for myself I may like to buy a Sharp Aquos RGB direct back Lit TV , I am looking for a bigger price erosion by Q2 2010 until I can afford one. Then, now it is selling at $18,000.00!

Trend of LED Manufacturing

Trend of Package Size
The Trend is going for high performance Ceramic base small footprint LED at 3mmx 3mm. Cree Xlamp is 3.45mm x 3.45mm, Not sure if Lumileds Rebel will set a new standard in future. Rebel package size is 3.62mm x4.61mm. Oslon of Osram 3 mm x 3mm x 1.6 mm (Smallest).

Trend of Wafer Size
The 6” wafer was recently been an hot topics and seems that many US, Japanese and European LED players are ready to go for it. As the large wafer will definite produce more LED and at lower cost of 30% estimated!

The industry requires the equipment suppliers to synchronize with the LED Development. We have been saying the front end is developing faster than the back end. I think that is true.

Trend of Package
Traditionally that individual company has it own design and that has been gone through 10 years market test. There are so many people who partly are copy cats and partly are LED makers with good performance chip. Though the thermal performance may not as good as the original but they are selling much cheaper, so the market has been segregated into two sectors: one is high end that has strength on output and thermal performance and naturally higher in price, the other is the rest major users that may not require higher thermal performance but the cost is just 40% or less than the original. So thee two market segments have been well defined now. The ratio is about 80:20. For those High End Packages from EU and USA, if the cost is not able to further driven down to an intermediate level, they will be facing tough competitons for Similar package made by Taiwanese and Chinese.

So many of these companies are focusing for new development on ceramic small foot print LED.

Trend of the Material
The use of larger panel of Ceramic Substrates has a better cost advantage as the larger the panel say form 4” to 6 there is an added cost but not in direct proportional to the area of the material. The advantage of larger than has a more significant saving on the machine utilization time as output indexing does lower the output of the unit. More saving will be the Process time for Silicone Liquid mounding as typical mould time is in 5-10 mins, and if the LED panel is 4” would be saving a lot of time for the Machine by comparing with 2” which has only 25% of the LED of 4” Panel.

Trend of process
There is a need for high thermal performance on LED as to minimize the thermal drift, as this drift causes instability of the colour Wave Length, and Efficacy. Now 85% of the LED is now manufactured by Epoxy process, and there are numerous ways for trying to define itself for a better process. Solder is one of them and through studies that there will be more benefit by using Solder.

Let's watch out for a couple of years for a better die bonding process that can provide better, cheaper and brighter LED. The End users will be beneficiary.

New Oslon LX LED from Osram

Osram has made the Debut of Flat Oslon LX as latest product in the hot Back Light Unit Market.

The Smallest 1 W OSLON LX LEDs pack almost 80% of their light into the light guide. This small foot print ceramic Base 3x3x1.6mm LED is made for backlighting LCD displays, the two white versions provide strong light 75 lm or 90 lm at 350 mA that can be very efficiently injected into thin light guides 2-4mm.

The integrated polynomial lens with a beam angle of 125° is designed to achieve injection efficiency into the light guide of almost 80%.
The OSLON LX is available for two color spaces. The multi-white version (High Color Gamut White) covers 100% of the sRGB color space and has a typical light output of 75 lm. The ultra-white version of the LED covers 80% of the sRGB color space and is a little brighter, with a typical light output of 90 lm. This enabling them to achieve the required brightness level with fewer LEDs and with up to 30% savings in costs. '

We are would not be surprised to see these three Musketeers Cree, Lumileds and Osram will possible collaborate and set an industrial standard for 3x3mm LED package LED with super low cost solution for tomorrow lighting world!

What are the obstacles for LED becoming truly general lighting?

Strategies Unlimited believes the LED lighting market will grow by 28% from 2008 to 2012, but many challenges remain.

As the LED lighting market grows beyond single color and color-changing applications into general illumination applications such as residential, commercial and off-grid applications, and ultimately into outdoor area applications, it is forecast to exceed $5 billion in 2012, corresponding to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 28% from 2008 to 2012.

That looks very promising but I think that there are still a lot of obstacles for preventing this promising adoption number to come true!

First, the LED efficiency is just around 26% with the best LED chip we have, still 74% of the energy will be inevitably converted to heat energy so there we can see that all LED direct replacement light bulb comes with a heat sink which may the cost higher and looks clumsy. Of course they are better design like Parathom and Master LED from Osram and Philips respectively.

2nd challenge is that say one of the world largest CFL and LED maker Osram has 50 factories. Amongst them, two of them are for LED, rest of them is CFL and incandescent light fixture, Does these two factories will be promoted by their top management for expansion and force the other 48 factories to lose market share and close in the end.

The LED replacement fixture is far less bright as the Traditional energy saving lamp. I am using LED fixture at home, but My study place is still a single Energy Lamp as it is brighter. So not until a LED of efficacy of 200 lm/watt is launched, the LED replacement lamp will not be as popular as these CFL are today!

In recent years, LED technology has made impressive performance gains, which in turn have improved the efficacy of LED lighting fixtures. In the forecast period 2008-2012, white LED fixtures will make gains in market share as the best commercially available high-performance white LEDs move beyond luminous efficacies of 100 l/W.

Another way of being a obstacle is that how to prevent theft of the Expensive LED in the office or factory, a reasonable good quality LED lamp is valued $30-60 and that is a tempting for people who might risk stealing the LED light whenever that is an opportunity for using it at his house!
So only the new building that has a ne fixture that come with special design to prevent the light bulb to be easily been removed would reduce or prevent them to be “Lost”! Means that the market for LED directly replacement bulb would be much smaller than we expect...

The LED directly replace for CFL is still expensive, well 5 years ago it is 80 times more expensive than energy Light bulb. Now that is 10-15 times more expensive, not until it is 3-5 times more expensive, the popularity of the LED direct replacement bulbs will not be Popular!

The angle of light emission of LED light bulb is till narrow as comparing with the energy light bulb which is practically 360 degrees. LED is around 80-120 Degrees with larger the emission angle, the less the average light output.

However, this will be only the beginning for the ultimate replacement of conventional light sources, including high-efficiency fluorescent and HID fixtures. However, many challenges face the LED industry to accomplish that goal, all of which are discussed in a new report released by Strategies Unlimited.

“LED lighting Fixtures – Market Analysis and Forecast” provides a detailed assessment of the market drivers and challenges faced by the LED lighting fixture industry in penetrating the general illumination market. It provides application analyses and forecasts for nine lighting market segments through 2012.

Let's work harder for achieving the goal!

Dynamic Contrast of LCD TV with LED BLU

Dynamic Contrast of LCD TV, LCD-screens comprises a backlight unit which is permanently emitting light and an LCD-panel in front of it which modulates transmission of light with respect to intensity and chromaticity. In order to increase the contrast of such LCD-screens the backlight can be (globally) dimmed when the image to be displayed is dark (i.e. not comprising high intensity image data) while the image data is numerically corrected and adapted to the reduced backlight intensity.

In such a way the dark regions in dark images can be improved and the contrast between subsequent frames can be substantially increased. Also the contrast within one frame can be expanded intentionally depending on the histogram of the image (some sporadic highlights in an image may be cut or suppressed). There is quite some digital signal processing required for implementation of the dynamic contrast control technique in a way that is pleasing to the human visual system (e.g no flicker effects must be induced).

The contrast within individual frames (simultaneous contrast) can be increased when the backlight can be locally dimmed. This can be achieved with backlight units that are realized with arrays of LEDs. High-dynamic-range (HDR) LCDs are using that technique in order to realize (static) contrast values in the range of CR > 100,000.

When we go to the electronic shop, there is no surprise to see that they have more than 1,000,000:1 and even 2,000,000:1 Contrast in some of the spec sheet of the latest LED Back lit TV, so in the common paper specification comparison, Does a 300,000:1 Contrast is 100 times better than the 3,000:1, of course, the answer is yes. When we compare then precisely, we can see that there is difference of say some 10 times by our naked eye comparison.

Similarly, this phenomenon ressembly the human ear sensitivity. It is useful and accurate to express perceived loudness in the logarithmic decibel (dB) scale; a change of 1 dB, which corresponds to a 25.9% change in power level, is considered to be the smallest change in sound power level perceivable by the average human ear under idealized test conditions. An increase/decrease of 3 dB corresponds to a doubling/halving of power and distance of average perceivability. An '84 dB' source "speaker" would require a 400-watt amplifier to produce the same audio energy as a '90 dB' source being driven by a 100-watt amplifier.

The CCFL TV is actually hard to have the same amount of Light intensity of LED. So the LED has a high bright side as intensity is higher and the LED can have 2D local dimming as f they are Direct back light that can turn off the back light such that absolute darkness can be made possible, so the paper specification will be many times better.

In fact we can see the difference of the picture, however if you have no intention to scrutinize the TV picture quality, you may not easily see the big difference, also especially in Electronics Store of Hong Kong, they are used to put illumination lights as many as they can. As They believe that a brighter shop will attract more visitors and customers This is a Common Environmental Problem as on the other hand, they turn the air con to a very low temperature such as to offset the immense heat generated by the Lights! Bad Practice!

Since the shops ambient light is so bright that is a draw back for the visitor to distinguish the dynamic contrast of two different TV when they try to choose, so the best is to make a darker demo room for display the TVs such that we can really can see and find out the big difference in contrast.

Challenge on LED Die Bonder Equipment

The trend for 1W LED is going to chip scale packaging, and like those major available production in the market, the size of the LED Package is in the range of 3 to 4mm. The material is ceramic substrates, and most of them ate epoxy or Flux Eutectic, process.

There are a lot of challenge and see who can manage this entire factor for a successful launch of such a product in the competitive market. There is no perfect process, however to be a pedigree of LED in the market, firstly we should have a stable supply of LED with high efficacy; as if you are a chip design would be a pre-requisite.

Cost and performance are neighborhood but there is always dilemma when cost is a prioritized factor, as we know the ceramic substrate is quite an expensive item for 4” panel is over few tenth of dollars, all depends on how may LED you can put onto this panel, the larger the panel may be having bigger advantage. The cost as a 6” Panel may be additional 15% more expansive than a 4” panel. So if one can manage to use larger panel would be able to drive down the BOM cost lower by a significant amount.

Easy to talk but hard to achieve, a bigger panel will inevitable bring in certain problem such as die bonder constrain as most of the Die bonder is not able to handle 4” wide panel easily.

Warppage of panel is 3X more with 2X larger in size, the average best panel we can get in the market will be having 0.3%-0.5% the width of warppage with size over 4”.
There is a challenge to take care f the warppage.

The package is gong to be thinner and thinner, the thickness of ceramic panel varies from 0.1mm to 1mm. for LED substrates, and the thickness is running between 0.2mm-0.4mm. The thinner the substrates will have higher challenge on the bonding equipment, as the bonding machine should not create any damages or scratches on the thin panel.

And the machine should be able to have up down anvil block or other method to handle the whole panel without damaging it. As we know that the panel is not flat, naturally the die bonding process and glue dispensing process should have an auto height searching function. The force control of the bond head has to be consistent and not to over drive the dies and in certain cases we have to have certain Bond line thickness >5 microns for epoxy process.

High Silver Epoxy is usually have more than 70% of the silver flakes and the carriers will be less in volumes, the epoxy will be viscous, typical visocity will be in the range of 22,000-40,000 CPS. Such kind of thick epoxy will significantly lower down the UPH , this bottle neck for UPH will have to be solved either by increasing the speed of the dispensing process or double the number of epoxy stage. The Later is seems easier as increasing the speed of Dispensing will have adverse effect on the glue size and volume.

For the latest design approach for manufacturing consideration, Silicone liquid molding process is used, in order to have an aligned fudicial mark align as the molding machine alignment method, the Die bonder should have a similar way for Vision inspection method as the moulding machine, That will require a Global alignment of the whole panel, so there will be requiring the die bonder o have a vision system that cab snap images on the fudicial mark at the four edges of the panel.

In order to maximize the number of LED on the panel, the epoxy has to be dispensing exactly the right amount for the dies, too much of the epoxy will bridge the adjacent circuitry and or creating EOD. That is an important process as it is required to be fast, accuracy, and evenly dispensing on the whole panel with high consistency.

Another challenge is bonding accuracy, when more number so dies is place don the panel, the placement accuracy will be shrinked to a narrow range of +/-20 microns or even smaller and die rotation to a range of +/-1 deg.

As overall summary, the die bonding process requires certain equipment which is
-Placement accuracy +/-20 microns
-Die rotation angle +/-1 deg
-Bonding area is 4” wide or more
-Introduce no scratches or damages on the thin crackers
-Able to detect the bonding level at epoxy and bonding stage
-Able to perform global alignment other than the multi-point vision alignment
-UPH 8,000 or more

Such a sophisticated machine is inevitably expensive, glad to know that ASM AD838 series has a cost effective solution on this!

Ceramic Base Package LED

There are numerous types of LED which was made with Ceramic as base material. With the Consideration of high Thermal Conductivity 180 W/m/K and 4.8 Coefficient of Thermal Expansion ppm/K which matches with the Blue LED Die material InGaN. As we know that the thermal performance of a LED is crucial in keeping the LED “Cool”.

Take for an instance, referring to the Data Sheet of Rebel; reducing the junction temperature from 135 deg C to 130 Deg C of Rebel will be able to increase the life time of 18,000 hours!

Silicon bas material probably is the best substrate material as Silicon’s Thermal Conductivity is 168 W/m/K and 4.2 Coefficient of Thermal Expansion ppm/K which are even better than AlN for die matching. Silicon Substrates might be the best base material for CTE matching.

There is always debatable that G2G Gold to Gold may be the better in term of heat transfer capability than Direct Eutectic. There is less LED guys practice in control the Bond line thickens of Silver epoxy as that is not easy for a small LED chip 0.3mmX 0.3mm or even 1mmx1mm. Some of the requirements include the control the BLT to be more than 5 microns and less than 10 microns that is already tough!

At the same time to control good die placement accuracy typically at a range of +/-20 microns and die rotation angel to be within +/-1 deg for same a LED chip of 1mmx1mm.
Is easy with some of the best LED die bonders in the market. The Challenge is how to ensure the solder has a consistence and high BLT. How to ensure that there is no overflow of the solder material onto the adjustment circuitry as the LED footprint is going to smaller and smaller.

How about Soft solder and Direct Eutectic process. Solder has a good CTE matching as we can control a thicker Bond Line thickness on Solder and may be too expensive for similar thickness for Direct Eutectic process.

There is novel process being discussed is to apply Soft solder as the bonding material for LED chip. As Soft solder is excellent in CTE with Copper as substrate material as Copper Thermal Conductivity is 300 and his CTE is 18 which is too high for LED chip material, so if we can have a successful thick bond line thickness such as to act as good cushion for the In GaN to Copper, may this is the futuristic perfect die bonding process. Some of the major LED companies are working closely with the bonder equipment supplier to develop this kind of process.

From the attached picture a few example of LED is displayed, they have a similar characteristic, Small footprint 3 mm x3 mm, thin as 2 mm, Dome lens and ceramic substrates. From the about packages shown, the major players has their own 1W LED package that has similar package size, more or less a standard has been formed. That is a good to the SSL industrial followers to apply the LED on their SSL display panel and or lamp fixtures.

I am interesting to see what will be the next successful package that can replaced the current one with the following outperforming factors in Cost, Thermal conductivity, and performance!

LED City

Cree, an U.S.-based Light Emitting Diode company and the City of Raleigh Durham, the anchor city in a rapidly growing metro area, announced a joint city-wide initiative to test, deploy and promote LED technology focused on a variety of general lighting applications on Feb., 2007.

The “LED City” initiative is designed to create a “living laboratory” to deliver the economic, environmental and usage benefits of LED lighting to the residents of Raleigh. The first project is focused on validating both the cost savings and technology capabilities of LEDs through an installation of LED lighting in the City’s Municipal Building parking deck.
Both Cree and Raleigh public officials expect the initiative to serve as a model for other cities that are considering implementing energy-efficient infrastructures. Now there a more than 10 LED cities including City of Toronto, Tian Jin of China, Torraca of Italy, and Gwang Ju of Korea are some of the Cities participating in this programme. The LED City is a way to promote using more effcient energy to reduce CO2 emission.

Besides, Some of the Asian country are the pioneers of supporting s Greener world by employing LED in the Cities, Singapore and Japan, a pedigree of environmental supporting countries, has been using close to 100% LED in the Traffic display and Traffic light, China has been intensively using LED for the traffic light and Traffic signage, where as Hong Kong is running backwards, there is close to 0% of LED on the traffic Light.
I am afraid that Hong Kong might be the last City to change LED for the traffic light in Asia.

On the other hand, HK Electric Lamma Power Station at Lamma Island has a total Capacity 3735MW. In 2008, power station’s coal fired unit generated approx. 83% of electricity where gas fired unit generated 17%. Hong Kong is not advance at all in term of Green Power utlization!
Every day, tons of sinter ashes are being generated and that would degrade the quality of air!

LED for Honda Automotives

Osram Presentation Material at LED show

Automotive has been intensively using LED since 1999. Nowadays, there are 300-350 LED in a car, a Maybach is even using 528 LEDs. The use of LED brings along a lot of advantage like Saftey as LED turn on in juts 2 ns and Incandescnet may need 300 ms which is many times slower. LED is power saving vesus the use of incandescent light bulbs. If all Signal function of standard incandescent lamp were replaced with LED, the power consumption will be reduced from 206W to 40W. The lower Electrical consumption created reduction of 237 grams of CO2 emission for a distance of 100KM when comparing with Incandescent options.

Take for an instance, assume 200 hours of Brake operstion, 220 hours of tail signal and 75 hours of turning signal operation per year, A median Vehicle age of 9.7 years using Joule LED will cut 400 Kg of CO2 emission over the life of the vehicle. The lower wattage reduces the drag on the electrical system, which translates into small but measurable fuel saving. An Equivalent of an approxiamtely 20 Litre of gas will be saved a year too.

RCL Rear Combination lamps are almost LED for certain Mid range and Hi End Car. The only challenge is the Hi beam Head lamp as it has to generate as much as a few thousandy Lumen of white light under the high temperture of engine compartment. European Cars such as Audi R8, Q7 is using Philips. Mercedes Benz is consider to use LED hi Beam head lamp. DRL (day light running lamp) is Osram Gold Dragons.
On the other hand Japanese car is yet not going LED Hi beam LED head lamp until recent car show that Honda is using a conservative way of Multi LED to form the hi beam head lamp. This is not the first Example as Cadillac Escalade Platinum has been using Osram Ostar LED as the Hi and Low beam Head lamp seince end 2007.

Japanese is used to be a leader in LED design and Efficacy 12 year go, however now they have been overtaken by US and European players in term so Efficacy and design. Has been overtaken Japan as an average, except Nichia is still the world 2nd Highest Efficacy in LED emission at 145 Lm/Watt.
Recently Honda car such as CR-Z Concept, FCX Clarity and Insight Concept car has been reviewed with extensive use of LED as interior and exterior decorative LED, function LED and Signaling, As the Automotive forward lamp, they use Multi LED module. My comment on the LED layout is Gorgeous! I am looking forward that these Concept cars will be commercially available soon in Hong Kong.

LED Head Lamp shall be the future illumination light source

Since 2002, LEDs have developed rapidly due to their use in mobile phones. With the improvement of LED luminescence technology, LEDs no longer rely on the mobile phone industry. They now enter the semiconductor lighting era. But due to limited Efficacy, still we have to wait for a while before that kind of higher efficacy LED 200Lm/Watt can be invented for more applications other than automotive illumination.

The Auto production was low in the past three quarters, until government subsidizing the replacement of old vehicles, Ford has announced that they will have to increase their production from 490K units to 570 K unit in the fourth quarters. This may have a positive sign of the early recovery of auto industry.
There are almost 300-350 LED in a car and Auto LED has a much tougher requirement on reliability. Naturally the sales price of the LED for Auto is higher than other application.

Currently, brake lights are the main LED application for vehicles. The market penetration rate was 53% in 2007; the figure will increase to 85% by 2011. In addition, the penetration rate of vehicle LED taillights was close to 15%, and the figure is expected to reach 38% by 2011.
Moreover, the Cadillac Escalade was the first car in the world to adopt LEDs both in its high beam and low beam lights, signifying that LEDs have entered the headlight era. Taiwan Everlight will also start the mass production of LED headlights as early as Q3 2008; their main client is China DongFeng Motor Corporation. Audi R8 with a production volume of 20 units day, hand made with the best technician who is selected from all Audi technicians.
I did see front high beam head lamp light up, with two Snow White LED beam, with the Osram DRL LED surrounding it. That light up appearance has a stunning technological outfit of powerful muscle car dressed in a fine German tuxedo. That was eye catching when it moved gracefully and slowly from the Convention Centre towards central.

Audi R8 Hi beam LED was a masterpiece of Lumileds using its TTFC Lumiramic technology, I am wondering that this might be given precedence over all other LED type in the High Power Illumination LED development.

How Does the CCFL and RGB direct LED back light unit look like?

The top one is the CCFL LCD back light unit which is thick and it contains certain percenetage of mecury.
Second picture is Sony HCFL (Hot Cathode Florenscent Lamp) which is claimed to have less 40% power consumption than CCFL.
The Third one is the Edge Lit Back lit unit. It illustrates the design of the edge lit LED whcih has two high bright led column on the lift and right vertical Edges of the LED panel.
The Fourth picture is the Sony RGB LED matrix or direct RBG Back lit unit, each module consists of 4 LED, Red, Blue and Two Green, since the Green LED is not as efficient as RED and Blue, we have to use two pieces of Green LEDs.

Etiquette

During a good manners and etiquette class being held for young children, the teacher says to her students:"If you were courting a well educated young girl from a prominent family and during a dinner for two you needed to go to the toilet, what would you say to her?"

Mike replies: "Wait a minute, I'm going for a piss."The teacher says: "That would be very rude and improper on your part.

"Charlie replies: "I'm sorry I need to go to the toilet, I'll be back in a minute."The teacher says: "That's much better but to mention the word ''toilet'' during a meal, is unpleasant."

And Little Johnny says: "My dear, please excuse me for a moment. I have to go shake hands with a personal friend, whom, I hope to be able to introduce to you after dinner. "

World First Water Cooling LED bulb

These Hydralux-4 bulbs are really nice, and the 360 degree lighting acts similarly to a small incandescent light bulb. This is pretty revolutionary in the industry as most LED bulbs are directional. As most of the LED bulb is unidirectional with limited light coverage.

Eternaleds Inc. has introduced the world's first liquid-cooled LED light bulb, the HydraLux-4, that gives true 360 degree light to finally allow consumers to maintain that "high-end" look, while getting the superior energy efficiency of LEDs. The Eternaleds Hydralux-4 LED Light bulb consumes 4W to provide the light equivalent of 25W incandescents with a lifetime of 35,000 hours.

Features:

Long Lasting at 35,000 hours.

Fully-dimmable.

Outdoor-approved.

Cool to the touch. The HydraLux-4 runs cool!
Don't know if the water will be heated up gradually and Oxidizing the component of the LED and associated circuit. Also water may absorbs some of the light emission. How Reliable it would be?

LED light bulb Q & A

Are LED bulb are rated to be used in Hazardous Condition (Class 1 division 1 areas)?
No.

Will your LED light bulb work on a Dimmer?
No, we do not recommend using our LED light bulbs on a dimmer switch, this type of switch can potentially cause damage to the bulb. Some dimmer switches do not have a true "off" position and may continue to illuminate an LED bulb when turned all the way down because LED bulbs use so little power. Unless the LED buld is specified can be used with Dimmer.

Can your LED bulb be used with day/night Photo cells?
Due to the low power consumption of the LED bulbs they do not work with all of the photo cell light controls found in light fixtures. On some models they will not turn off and with others they may blink. Because of this we do not recommend using them with a light fixture that is activated by a photo cell. It is possible for the bulbs to be damaged from the blinking.

Why some of the LED bulb does not work properly in extreme temperature?
Any temperature below 14° F or above 122 F may cause a LED bulb to flicker, dim, change color, or cease to function. Once the LED bulb is returned to an operational environment it should began to work properly. But when the LED bulb is placed in extreme high temperature, it may not be able to function even returned to an operational environment as the electronics component may be damaged due to overheating. They should not be used in an enclosed fixture with a cover over it. This will raise the temperature and kill the electronics circuitry.

What does PAR means?
PAR is also a unit of bulb measurement. In this system of lamp identification the first number listed denotes the maximum diameter of the lamp expressed as a number of 1/8's of an inch. For example, some common sizes are: PAR-38 (4.75") PAR-30 (3.75") PAR-20 (2.5")
Most of the available bulbs currently are “medium” or “Edison” base; which means they will fit into most sockets in the US.

What is the AC voltage tolerance of your LED bulb?
That should be +/-10 % if not specified. In fact some type of the latest design works from 85-260V as they have an inverter to control the Current into the LED.

Does your LED bulb emit UV lights?
No, but you should never point an LED light into your eyes. The light is very bright and could cause damage.

Why Don’t incandescent bulb last longer than it should be?
Some incandescent bulbs do last longer but there are some downsides to them. One way to make incandescent last longer is to increase the thickness of the filament so that it will not deteriorate as quickly. The down side to this is that it takes more energy to heat the filament and the filament does not glow as bright. These types of long-life bulbs typically glow an orange color. If you purchase a long-life incandescent bulb you might find that a 100 watt bulb only puts out the light of a 75 watt bulb while it consumes 100 watts. The amount of money wasted in energy with this type of bulb means you would have been better off purchasing a regular bulb.
Another way to make an incandescent last longer is to use a rare gas called Krypton gas; and no, it does not come from Superman's home planet. Krypton gas is denser than the standard gas used (Argon gas) and helps to keep the filament from deteriorating as fast. You will find that "premium" incandescent light bulbs contain Krypton gas, but unfortunately cost more money.

Can your LED bulbs be used at outdoor?
All of our LED bulbs are for indoor use only except where noted. Technically it is possible if special attention made for the dsisgn, moreover the Mine lampo are all changign to LED as for safety purposed as it has less change fot creating fire that trigger gas insider the mine!
What is the size of the screw base of the Edison base LED bulb? The size is E-26. This size works in all common fixtures in Hong Kong.

What is the proper way of dispose of used LED bulb?
Follow your local disposal procedure for electronic products with circuit boards in them.

Do LED bulbs contain Mercury as CLFs?
No.

Enjoy a Green Home Illumination using LED light bulb!

Cosmos Telecom Hong Kong

Friends of mine asked me where to buy my LED light bulb, I would like to tell them this Shop Cosmo Telecom.

The boss Mr. Han has been working for this lighting field more than 20 years, he is a Canadian. He knows a lot of LED. He put the best LED into his product, Xlamp, XRE, Luxeon, K2 and Seoul Semi LED...etc.

Today, a US friend of mine went there to buy another 11 pieces of 110V GU10 Warm white Lamps for his home in San Francisco. He has to buy up to 60 pieces total for his big house. I bought another two E27 3W LED bulb for my living room. The Price is less than USD15.00 each!

This shop supplies Philips MasterLED, home make LED light bulb 220V E27 screw type socket for Hong Kong domestic use. In fact his light bulb works from 110V to 230V AC.

They are constructed by three K2 LEDs and was selling at a special discount price for us!

If you are eager save more on the electic bill each month, an energy saver LED light bulb is your choice. My house uses 10 only. And by simple calculation, I may save HKD500 a year base on running LED 10 hours a day as to compare with CFL light bulb.

Canadian Fishing

The day after his wife disappeared in a kayaking accident in the Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia , a man answered his door to find two grim-faced Mounties.

'We are sorry sir, but we have some information about your wife' said one Mountie.

'Tell me! Did you find her?' the husband shouted.

The Mounties looked at each other. One said, 'We have some bad news, some good news, and some really great news. Which do you want to hear first?

Fearing the worst, the ashen husband said, 'Give me the bad news first.' The Mountie said, 'I'm sorry to tell you, sir, but this morning we found your wife's body in the bay.

' Oh my God!' exclaimed the husband. Swallowing hard, he asked, 'What's the good news?'

The Mountie continued, 'When we pulled her up, she had 12 twenty-five pound snow crabs and 6 good-size lobsters clinging to her.'

Stunned, the husband demanded, 'If that's the good news, what's the great news?'

The Mountie said, 'We're going to pull her up again tomorrow.

Vizio First LED Backlit 55" LCD TV

The first 55-inch LED-backlit TV at the Vizio Inc. test lab in Irvine. The company's first LED-backlit sets are slated to hit the market soon with price at about $2,000 each.

LED-backlit TVs -- an evolution of the standard LCD set -- have been on the market since 2004.

Vizio, the discount electronics company that would likely become the biggest supplier for LCD TV in Northern America through its aggressive pricing, with such pricing the other competitors in the territories will have to follow or will faded out for the market. As for TV sets in USA. surprise that they can sell much cheaper than those in Hong Kong under same size, similar models. Their price is only 60% of that in Hong Kong!

Probably they have far larger retail network for much bigger sales volume, many people would not resist to buy TV from Costco and hand carry to Hong Kong. All we need to have is Step down transformer as US Voltage is 60Hz 110V whereas Hong Kong is 230V 50 Hz.

I have bought one at home for my 1967’s Mclntosh MR67 FM tuner 20 Years ago. It is Western Electric 500AV 230-110V Step down transformer, with normal loading, it is not hot, may be a few degrees above room temperature.

This year, LED-backlit televisions have accounted for less than 2.5% of world TV shipments from manufacturers. That's because they so recently came on the scene and usually cost double or more compared with standard LCD sets.Vizio's first LED-backlit set, which will hit the market in August, will be a 55-inch model priced at a relative bargain price of about $2,000. Other manufacturers have LED-backlit sets in that size for about $3,500 or more.

In the long run, the research group is bullish on LED-backlit TVs. In a report issued 26 July, DisplaySearch predicted that by 2014, shipments of LED-backlit sets would surpass standard LCDs.

Recently, Tsinghua Tongfang has released a LED TV in exhibition, who knows Hisense of Shenzhen Seven Stars and Skyworth will not participate the manufacturing of high end LCD TV light up by LEDs.

The future is LED, there is no doubt about it, the television manufacturing industry could use the shot in the arm that a new technology can provide. When the industry went from LP to CD, Cassette to MiniDisk, Analog to digital and from CRT tube to flat-panel, it drove a lot of growth because it was very exciting, that's what the industry needs, something to drive excitement, Now LCD TV with Backlit LED, will create a new product cycle.

Samsung's 46-inch model is only 29.5mm thick, giving it a startlingly thin profile. The colors an LED-backlit TV displays can be turned up brighter, making the sets stand out in a store. But not all experts agree that the flashiness of LED-backlit sets are worth the extra money. Is not just a marketing gimmick.

As LED uses less energy and, perhaps most important, doesn’t contain mercury like the florescent bulbs CCFL that light up standard LCD TVs. The eco-advantages are a key to the future of LED-backlit TVs
