For the Competition of LCD TV, After Samsung, Then LG, JVC, now Samsung Electronics Co Ltd unveiled its "world's thinnest" 3.9mm-thick 40-inch full-HD LCD panel for TVs at FPD International Oct 2009.
To achieve the thinness, Samsung Electronics made improvements to the optical elements so that LED light efficiently and evenly comes to the liquid crystal cells.
Due to the edge-lit backlight, there were a few streaks seen on the screen. But the company said that they can be eliminated by improving technologies in the future. The luminance, contrast and frame frequency of the panel are 400cd/m2, 5,000:1 and 120Hz, respectively.
Samsung Electronics also showcased two ultra-slim LCD panels that use the same technologies and are designed for monitors and notebook PCs, respectively. The panel for monitors is 24 inches in size and 3.5mm in thickness, pixel count and luminance are 1,920 x 1,200 and 250cd/m2, respectively. The panel for notebook PCs features a screen size of 12.1 inches, a thickness of 1.64mm and a weight of 120g. Its pixel count and luminance are 1,200 x 800 and 200cd/m2, respectively.
