LED should be used instead of CFL in Hong Kong's Lighting Illumination

Technology revolution that lights up LED as the future lighting source.
European, Australian and Canadian Law bans the use of incandescent lamp in 2009-2012
HK shall likely ban Incandescent of 25W-65W in 2011.

However the Government should not impose law to stop using incandescent lamps as there are certain applications that it is best fit for the purpose. As Incandescent lamp CRI is 100, whereas CFL and LED is only 80-90 only. Incandescent lamp work perfectly in colour reading or verification for printing lab and Decorative chandeliers which require a single point source of light.

CFL vapor that contain mercury is 2,000 times higher that human people can be tolerate. So when we break it in air that can be harmful to human beings when inhaling. LED seems to be the best choice for replacing incandescent lamp in term of energy saving, Life time, safety for our heath and less expensive at the end of the year.

LED replacement lamp for interior lighting is still considered rather expensive, a branded 7W LED light bulb is around HKD300. However, we can expect that the price if the lamp will drop at rate of -30% a year. So within 2 years time the ASP of a 7 Watt LED lamp will be in the range of HKD100-120. That is about three times of the CFL in similar power rating. Non-branded one is selling at even at only 30% price of the branded one in Hong Kong.

Yesterday, City University Electronics engineering faculty Hui Shui Yuen criticized HK Chief Executive Ronald Tsang should promote LED instead of CFL for Hong Kong.

I think to certain extent we need to have a long term road map for total green lighting solution, CFL may be the current majority for lighting and LED is the coming future standard! Incandescent Lamp will be less competitive comparing with LED with a price being affortable and reasonable. When more people understand the pros and cons of them and at same time LED are being broadly used, incandescant lamp will eliminate it self.

LED TV popularity is on the Up

Sony was the first company to launch a LED-backlit LCD TV and an edge-lit LED TV – the 40-inch Bravia KLV-40ZX1M. It plans to unveil a new ZX5 range later this year with a depth of just 15.8mm. Now Sony has assigedn Foxconn as OEM for Sony LCD TV.
So Sony, used to be highly engineering technology and design are now using Taiwan manufacturing facilities for their LED TV, is this one of the way to reduce the price gap between Samsung and Sony Itself or this is one way to regain the lost market!?

Samsung LED TV
LEDs are considered less toxic than CCFL backlights because they don't use any mercury in the manufacturing process. They're extremely efficient and produce more light per watt than a traditional incandescent bulb. Crucially, they also consume about 40 percent less power compared to a conventional LCD TV.

As Yoon Boo-Keun, the President and General Manager of Samsung's Visual Display Division pointed out at IFA 2009: "If every TV in the world switched to LED, we could save 13 million kilowatts of electricity – enough to supply all 39 million households in Germany."

Samsung is currently leading the LED charge with its 6, 7 and 8-series TVs. Its top-end, 46-inch UE46B8000 LED-backlit LCD TV is only 29.9mm thick.

LED is a stop-gap technology until OLED arrivesOLED is viewed as the natural successor to LCD. The organic material used in an OLED panel emits its own light when charged, so there's no need for a separate backlight LED. But still would take a few years for the yield and production process becoming profitable and mature for commercialization.

CFL Application

Some fact about CFLs Energy saving lamps.

The CFL claims to have a life time of 20,000 hours, actually it performs best after 100 hours as the chemical substance started to be full operational after the run in.

In general a CFL 5-6W lamp is equivalent to a 35 W Incandescent light bulb in term of light output. This is an important index to select the right brightness CFL for replacement.

Its light output would drop after running for 2,000 hours by approx. 5.2% and it continues drop it light intensity to about 19.3% after 22,000 hours.

This is some of studies of Choice magazine on a series of CFLs.

The rate of degrading depends on individuals brand and model. As for my experience some the lamp will degrade very fast and even no output after 2,000 hours and some even found not much change on the output (actually we can not tell unless we measure it) after 3 years, approx 10,000 hours.

From the report of Choice Magazine: Philips is not the best, however GE Edison Plus (HKD$35.00) and Osram (HKD$25.00) were rated highest score for best offering and best rated respectively.

We should not blame Hong Kong executive officer Ronald Tsang to promote the CFL by offering HKD$100 coupon for every family to purchase CFL.

The market is so competitive and we do not necessary go for one selected brand his relative is representing. The consumer are smart enough to choose amongs these, Philips, GE, Osram, Sylvania, Sunlight...etc
If I were Ronald, I would rather promote LED Replacement lamp instead of CFLs. Partly to supprot Greener product and also support the inductry going for more reliable and energy saving products.

Top 5 LCD Monitor makers

While Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics increased their market share with aggressive marketing strategy in not only LCD Monitor but also TV in August, other Brands showed lowered production output in August compared to July due to stock level adjusting.

In terms of shipment market share by maker in August, Samsung Electronics comprised 18% market share by producing 2.4M units to be ranked in No.1 and Dell was ranked No.2 with 15% market share that had decreased 7% from July and LG Electronics was ranked in No.3 by adding 10% market share M/M to 13%.

With high activities in China market, Lenovo's shipment market share increased 14% M/M to 5.6% in August to be ranked in No.6 position.

Last year shipment ranking is Samsung as No.1 with market share 17.4%, followed by Dell 14.2%, HP 12.0%, Acer 11.7%, LG 11.5%, Lenovo 6.8%...

In Short, Samsung is LCD TV, Monitor, Netbook market leader and being 2nd as for Handphone. I see not reason why Samsung could be the handphone No. 1 market share leader in another 2 years!

Ways to cost down a LED Package

LED chip may take up 40% of a package LED of 1 Watt ceramic base HB LED.
And the Ceramic Substrate may take up 14% of the total cost of the LED.

So in short, if we want to reduce the cost of the LED, we can simply reduce the chip side say 30% such that the total cost of the LED material will be reduced by 1/3, at same time do improve and try to maintain the same light output of the larger chip 1 mm x1 mm.

And that is about 17% of the LED material cost and at same time it gains its number of LED Chip on wafer.. At Same time, if we reduce the LED from 3mmx 3mm to 2.5mm x 2.5mm. We furtehr reduce the substrate by 25% and epoxy by another 5% due to smaller chip footprint.

The total cost of reduction can be 25%. That may be a way to significantly mark a 2nd level power LED at different power rate and price tag.

The price here is of an estimation only.

A lot pof people is talking about 6 inch LED wafer before sawing, so that will be a real challenge and way for reducing the cost of an LED. At a recent conference in Hong Kong, Parvez, CEO of Rubicon explained the rationale behind the LED industry’s move to larger diameter wafers. “The availability of cost effective large diameter sapphire wafers and also LED processing equipment capable of manufacturing large diameter wafers is enabling LED producers to improve their process yields and chip throughput which reduces their overall chip costs,” he said.

So let's watch out when we can have 6" LED wafer. now most of them are 4" diameter, By time 6" is commonly in the market, the cost of the LED willd be much lower than now.

10 Points on LED TV

LED TV has become the new prized entertainment item for some households. It has created hot topics at the consumer electronics shops, Laser, Fortress or Broadway in Hong Kong. There is big promotion programme launched by Samsung at the darkest day of the economic meltdown beginning of the year, as they believed the people could consider to buy a better TV and whole family would sit down and watch the video porgramme rather than to go out for spending their money, I think this was a good timing and always Samsung has a bold marketing motive in sales in their history.

Now it is the time for LG who is coming up as a close follower for the promotion.

I have this experience, went to the shop talking to the same Sale people in Fortress Shop, before that guy was promoting Samsung LED TV and saying that this is top one brand in TV and they have the best technology for LED, no question not to buy from them. In August, I talked to same guy again I said how about LG, he said LG is the best choice as they are all made in Korean with good Korean Quality where Samsung LED was made in China!! Not as good quality as LG…. I was puzzled, how come they could distorted the picture in such a shop prior do two months time.
I saw that they are running the promotion on LG, not to focus on Samsung anymore!
They might have some instructions from the top management!?

One Staff engineer from a big company asked to show him where the LED TV is in the Broadway. It seemed to me he does not know what LED TV is?…. I was thinking that Samsung has already created the Sales Gadget to create a terms that has triggered something NEW and make such as an attraction for more new comers to search for more information on LED TV, at least they want to find out what the LED TVs are…

I am trying to illustrate that what I relate about LED TV is all about and what should we do about it in coming future to select the TV…

“LED TV” is in fact not a proper term to describe the Samsung new TV as Original LED TV means the entire TV screen is configurated and built by thousand pieces of LED. Most conventional LCD TVs use cold cathode fluorescent lamps or CCFLs for the backlighting. However, the LED TVs use light emitting diodes or LED as a backlight. One of the main challenges with the light emitting diode is the fact that it is too big for pixels on a television screen. So if someone tells you that the equipment is an LED TV, it is never going to be a true one and is likely to have a combination of other technology as well. The current main use of a true LED technology is for massive screens such as those that are used at sports stadiums, train terminal and department stores.

But now all we see is the LCD TV with LED backlit unit, so this is not appropriate by right to use “LED TV” to describe the TV. So this is only LCD TV which has been in the market for 10 years already, nothing is new.

1. What is LED Backlit unit?
LCD TV has to be light up at back to illuminate the TV Screen and to boost up the colour contrast. That is traditionally being broadly using CCFL as a standard material to illuminate.

2. What is CCFL?
CCFL is Cold Cathode Florescent Light, is in fact the Same kind of
Light fixture we are using at home. It contains certain amount of Mercury and is not advisable to be disposed without special treatment but who can do much now as there are Billions of such kind of light tubes in the world. That is why European is trying to stop this kind of product by replacing with better environmental friendly product such as LED… but not able to do it yet as the Efficacy of LED is still not able to be marketable in large scale for this Hugh light and illumination market.

3. How many types of CCFL in the market, the CCFL in general being used by most
Of the TV makers, and HCFL by Sony which has a effect of thinner tube of CFL and a better power efficiency, which goes in par with LED.

4. How many types of LED Back lit structure and design?
White TopLED LED is mounting on the edge and LED shine through the light guide to the centre of the LCD TV. Edge lit from side, either 4 sides tow vertical sides, tow top and bottom and even only one at the bottom side. Edge type is best for its thin TV outer profile, down to 5mm! But there is not local dimming. And closer looking into it you can see that the light is brighter at the side as comparing with the Centre of the screen. 4. Edge-lit TVs are really thin, but uniformity suffers. Direct white LED back lit, that is a better design with the screen being sectionized into say 400 smaller area, each contain say 10-20 LED in groups, so in short the Screen is lit up by these thousands of LED, the control is more complex and the effect is able to have Local dimming and best to control the blackness of the screen thus by right this can achieves a DCR Dynamic Contrast Ratio n of 3,000,000 to 1. So as the quality of the TV should be better in the Edge lit design. The cost of the Direct Back lit is much higher than Edge... and it is thicker in the construction the market Leader is able to make it as thin as 10mm.

5. The is another one using RGB LED on the direct back lit panels, this RGB is three colour Red, Green and Blue LED, the control is even more complex than the White LED Direct Back lit unit, it nay use up a Computer to control the colour brightness, balance in the colour gamut, they might use up 3,500 LED groups each consists of RGB Leeds, those the cost of the LED Back light construction is very high but there result is rich colour especially in RED.
thicker of the whole panel.

6. Is LED TV better in performance than Plasma TV?
From my point of view Plasma is still better as it does not rely on Back lit to illuminate up the LCD TV. It has it own lighting units as pixel to show the brightness. It has a better reproduction of the original Colour as from the signal input is. This is more or less than same As LP Vs. CD…. LP has a true musical tone than CD, no matter what kind of technology you use, That is the physics Nothing can change but of course commercial side there is 100,000 ways to destroy LP, but the human ears I the final Judge! But Plasma TV was blamed for it short life time, now the new Plasma no mater Samsung, Pioneer, They can stay safe without any problem for 20,000 hours. But the Plasma is hot as of consume at least 2X more power than the LED TV.

7. One downside to local dimming is an effect called "blooming," where brighter areas bleed into darker ones and lighten adjacent black levels. This effect varies widely from model to model; it's pretty noticeable on the Toshiba 46SV670U, for example, and much more difficult to notice on the Samsung 8500. Incidence of blooming is directly related to how many local dimming LED elements ("dimmable zones") are behind the screen, but some manufacturers won't divulge that information. Blooming isn't an issue on other kinds of displays, including edge-lit models.

8. Cost For LED TV is much higher that those LCD TV lit p by CCFL, The cost structure has a different of $100, to $1,000 in average (Depending on type of back light, white or RGB LED).
So as the selling prices.

9. Dynamic Contrast Ratio, there is a standardization of how to measure the black to White light intensity and thus to create the specification. Do not compare this kind of figure as a way to make buy decision as LG can have a DCR of 3,000,000:1 and Sharp Top series LC-65XSIM 15,000:1 by specification Sharp will lose to LG or Samsung.

10. How to make a buying choice?
Go to the shop, check with your budget and then go for the picture quality you think the best using the same Source blueRay of course, and Forget the technical specification at this moment. Look at the Centre portion for the True Blackness nor Greyer? And Look at different angel to see there is any Blooming on colour. If there is a LCD dark room that will be the bets, but so far most of the HK Retail show room does not provide you such a room for you to choose, So all we have to choose is o make a choice on that.. or

If you have limited budget, just for watch good picture quality movie, go and buy a Plasma TV, it is Cheap. Nice, bright and natural Colour. But it is thicker and Consumption with higher power, It will add on your bill in the whole year!

If you are electronics Freak, and like to go for the best technology and sleek design
Go buy Samsung 8500 series TV, it is slim, crystal frame, Optimum Performance and
Power comparison.

If your wallet is thick enough to achieve the best in the market, LCD TV from Sharp would not disappoint you, go and use your Amex card to Broadway for the LC-65XS1M, List price is HK$148,800. Certain shops are selling at about HK$125,500. I have been asking them for the price of the shop’s demo as I do not mind the TV has been running for 3 months as run in… As it does tell me that has been running no problem for that period of time, He offered me HK$98,000.00!

My opinion, we will see more LED TVs in coming few years and the CCFL back lit will stay safe for at east 4 years before they become extinct!

On the other side, Panasonic has announced not to manufacture CRT TV and his factory was sold to China. In China, there are 60% of TV are still CRT. There is still a huge Market for China and some third world Countries.

ASM DS520 Jetting machine

ASM has been developing a new jetting machine for the LED yellow phosphor dispensing.

The technology achieved was a result of tremendous effort in the material studies and selection of various jetting methodology.

The jetting performance varies on the silicone material characteristics. A typical Vertical Lamp application is to achieve an UPH of 50K, with jetting weight of 1.6 Grams of silicone material at variance of approx. 10% in weight.

There is certain LED players request to have some data on CIE figure on the jetting machine. However, we should be aware that the following factors would affect the CIE figure after the jetting.

1. The Die tilting

2. The wire bonding loop height variation

3. The variation of the Z height of the LED Cup (variance from 10 microns to 40 microns!)

4. The Silisone material itself

5. The jetting pump repeataibility

6. Temperature

7. Machine parameter and Set-up

They have been working along with more applications and beleive soon the DS520 will be the one of the solutions for the LED phosphor for us. Besdies, the tool is good for epxoy jetting, and underfilling for Flip Chips applications.

LED Testing, Sorting and Taping Solution

For LED Package testing, Sorting and Taping solution suppliers are classified into a three major players; the Swiss, Japanese, Malaysian and Taiwanese with the first two being the higher end and last two the lower.

And in the recent three years there has been developed a lot new packages which are becoming smaller than 1mm. The testing and sorting machine has been becoming very competitive in price/performance. There are more and more players who has gained a lot of technical knowhow on the design and application of a rotory turret for these pick and place, Test and sort from Bowl feeder input to Bulk bin output as a standard machine design.

ASM, used to be a total solution supplier for the IC, Discrete and CIS (Camera Module Image Senor) provider has been tranformed the latest motion contro,l vision capability and innovative mechanical design with the pick and place process onto the Package LED solution and they have successfully cracked into the competitive market Taiwan.

Large Revenue was generated from the largest Taiwanese LED manufacturers.

The first generation machine thus by demonstarting their UPH/Cost of investment and High MTBA (Mean Time Between assistance).

Now ASM test Sort and taping machine would likely the faster machine in the Package LED arean.

Moreover, with their team of almost 1,000 R & D engineers in Hong Kong, Singapore and China., they would be likely launched the 2nd genersation of machine for handling the popular small foot print ceramic base LED with Silicone Dome Lens with Mylar frame as input and output in form of Tape and Reel. This is mostly welcome by major LED players as the solution can provide a good LED die Tracecability.

Other tapeing machine soltuion is to have a Non-turret Deisgn taping machine which can be true solution for Package LED with dome lens as Turret introduces a lot of Pick and Place process, thus creates inevitable scratches and damages on the LED Lens.

With the intensive learning from vast customer data base on various LED products, fast turn around time for new design evaluation, there will be a infallible New Testing, Sorting and taping products coming up soon!

Consideration on Back Light on NB, Monitor and LCD TV

There is serious Considersation on the Back light design for various major Display type of Applications: Not Book (NB), Monitor and LCD TV.

For example Net Book, I think the major concern for Net book is the power consumption or battery life time. The LED display is the major power consumption besides Main Processor board where we can not do much after the CPU Chip is selected with the right speed.

An high efficacy LED usually is low power LED can have a higher efficacy up to 40%, if we can properly design the light guide and filter which can then maximize the battery Life time up to 8-10 Hours.

As for Monitor case, power consumption is no long a big concern, the user is expecting a good contrast and colour saturation, hence we can use direct back lit design. and Cost is the last consideration.

How about LCD TV Back light?
well, all despends what kind of price you want to position for the market on your TV, High end one will be looking at RGB direct back light for best Colour saturation and Highest DCR (Dynamic Contrast Ratio) and cost is the last to consider.

Where as the lower end smaller Size Panel sich as 32" or 42" the Slimmer design, optimum contrast and Colour Saturation with lowest cost will be the best approach for concluding orders.
Hence Samsung major TV series 5,6,7,8 is using Edge Lit Back lit deisgn, only if demanding people will look for 85 series with Direct back lit unit as to pursue best Contrast with customer eagers to pay another thousand dollar for it. Also There is a market need for Samsung to use it as weapon to conteract LG wich is built with White LED back lit unit for best DCR and Colour saturation.

Philips new 42PFL9803 Flat TV Goes LED Back lit

The new 42PFL9803 FlatTV from Philips won the “European LCD-TV 2008-2009” award from the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA). According to Philips, its 42-inch set "delivers levels of contrast and motion smoothness never achieved by an LCD before."
Philips is claiming an astonishingly high 2,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio.

The LED LUX system comprises a total of 1,152 RGB LEDs, split into 128 segments. Each of the 8 rows contains 16 segments, with 9 LEDs in each segment. These LEDs can be individually dimmed to precisely control the output of each pixel. So, even if a segment contains both bright and dark portions, the pixel values of the dark portions can be dimmed to deliver optimum contrast performance.

Wafer Level Package LED

WLP
WLPLED Wafer level Package for LED is an emerging technology from Denmark Hymite and now Taiwan for Going to the new WLP LED, more and more people especially with IC foundry facilities and experience are moving onwards to WLP LED. Now others involved in LED WLP technology include the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), Solidlite Corp., VisEra Technologies Co., Ltd., Xintec Inc. and Silicon Base Development Inc. (SiDBI).

Why Silicon
The key factors for this trend is that there are the following advantages: Silicon’s CTE or coefficient of thermal expansion is below 4 ppm/C, TC or thermal conductivity is in the 150-180 W/m.k. range, Silicon can provide a good thermal condition for LED.

IC die Integration
WLP Silicon wafer can be made using the lithographing process, in which photomasks replace molds. The TVS die and or the LED invertors chip may be able to be integrated onto the substrates within the same LED footprint.

Base Material Selection
There are three major way for substrates election as for LED substrates material,
Ployphthalamide (PPA) is the major lead-frame material for low-power chips packaging while ceramic and liquid crystal polymer (LCP) are primarily used for high-power packages.

Cost Comparison
The cost of ceramic packaging is the highest whereas WLP is the cheapest, with PPA and LCP in the middle. If a ceramic package costs US$0.25, a PPA would be around US$0.08, an LCP would be around US$0.10 and WLP would be around US$0.04.

Ceramic has a good melting point, ceramic-based lead frame, like PPA and LCP lead frames, has to be made with tooling, hence limiting the substrate reduction to micron scale. A PPA lead frame, for instance, can be miniaturized to 3.2 mm long by 1.8 mm wide at best, holding a 9-mil LED chip and an 8 mil TVS Die in it. WLP process enabling reflective layers such as Aluminum to be grown on silicon lead frames in the burning-hot chemical vapor deposition chamber. "The layer can reflect some 5% more light from the chip relative to generic lead frames, thereby boosting efficacy of a lamp.

Bonding Process
Epoxy and flux Eutectic reflow process is not a concern, Epoxy can be using stamping epoxy which is best for small cavity like 30mil x 30 mil with the latest stamping epoxy process and sophisticated control it sis able to provide a production mode of epoxy spread of 4 mil or less at each side of the LED chip still leaving room for the second bond pad and TVS die Having an ultra high melting point also makes silicon suitable for eutectic bonding, which is noted for a high melting point of minimum 282 Deg C. "The gold-zinc alloy is used to affix LED chip to silicon lead frames. As epoxy glues used in most LED packages melt at 180 Deg C, eutectic bonding is much better in thermal resistance and does not capture light in the package during high temperatures as epoxy. However Direct Eutectic bonding process impose a high challenge on the bonding equipment, as there is not easy to control the whole substrates with 8” diameter at such a constant temperature say +/-3 deg C. The second concern is that the first bonded LED may suffer too much on the eutectic temperature that it might actually kill the LED’ take an example Cree EZ1000 die can only last in 335 deg C for 5 seconds. And as we know the LED is kept cooler say a Rebel is reduced from a temperature of 330 Deg to 325 Deg C, the Actual life time can be
Increased more 18,000 hours! So there is some new novel eutectic bonding processes are under development.

Future LED
Likely the WLP is one of emerging material for LED manufacturing especially there is tight LED bare die supply. The IC foundry in Taiwan would not leave this opportunity to convert their MOCVD facilities to manufacture LED on a WLP format!

TV History and Road Map

I remember my first TV was dated in 1962. It was "Bush" made in the Britian, It was HKD$1100.00. That was about 4 Months salary of my Father! We have only one Channel " Rediffusion " English or Chinese for TV broadcasting corporation. And we have to pay for HKD$20.00 a month.

In 1967, The Colour TV era came with the launch of TVB Television Broadcast. Over the past 40 years, we have been using CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) as the TV set display which was invented in the 19 Century!

We can see not much breakthrough till 1995 for Plasma TV and PDP huge panel Display TV system. Now we all know it is time for the LCD TV with much faster response than some 6 years ago. And The latest technology is LED back Lit... with an end product of sleek slim design and thin profile of 5 mm in Thickness. that can be hung on wall. Power saving and have very high DCR Dynamic Contrast Ratio of up to 3 millions to one.

LED will be the main stream for backlit., and more advance video control will be designed for better video speed, colour and contrast... cost of TV will be lowered at less 15% a year udner the same size!

From now on, the new product development will come faster and have shorter life time.

What will be the new TV look like, instant You tube, net work connection, direct playback on all kinds of Video formats , or a hard disk to store up, auto recording on certain programme with newer system replacing G-code? Or built in Blue Ray players. Digital broadcast will be launched in 2012. So all the video can be manuplilated, stored and compressed and be inserted into your hand set, DPA phone for your vacation through Super Hi Speed new USB say tranceive 2 Movies in 4 seconds!
